About Wakan
The word "Wakan" means "sacred" in the Lakota language and "heart of the sky" in the Mayan language. The guidance to start Wakan came through Dr. Tom Pinkson, a psychologist, author and workshop leader, on Christmas Eve, 1983.
Four years later, we received our official 501(c)(3) designation as a religious organization.
Wakan helps people find, remember and incorporate into their daily life what is sacred to their highest awareness. Our role is to support this process as it unfolds for each individual through personal mentoring, year-long groups, and community celebrations.
We believe in doing whatever we can to help heal the Sacred Hoop of Life within and for ourselves, our families, our community and "all our relations." And, as we do so, to learn to walk in balance and harmony and beauty with all of creation.
If you would like to learn more about becoming a member of the Wakan community and/or supporting our work, please contact us. (Dues are $35 per calendar year; most but not all of our activities are open to everyone regardless of membership.)
